“When my mother had a stroke, they asked us for…” – Man shares shocking church experience, sparks reactions

A Nigerian man who shared his reasons for quitting church on social media, claiming personal experiences that altered his viewpoint over time, sparked conflicting responses.

The man revealed in a video posted on X (previously Twitter) that he finally stated his reasons for staying at home rather than attending church because many people frequently questioned his choice.

He claims that after moving to Lagos, his views on religion and churches drastically changed.

Recounting a personal experience, he said:

“A lot of people have accused me of always staying at home and not going to church. I want to tell you the three reasons why I stopped going. Number one, competition is too much in the church.

When I came to Lagos, I was driving Spider Camry 014. I went to a church on the Island, and they told me I couldn’t park inside, while bigger cars were allowed in.”

He also shared a terrible story about his mother’s illness and claimed that some churches prioritise money over compassion.

He claims that after his mother had a stroke, the family found it difficult to pay for her medical care.

However, they were allegedly under pressure for unpaid tithes rather than receiving assistance.

“You won’t believe pastors were calling us that we hadn’t paid tithe when my mother was sick. At some point, if we didn’t bring money, they wouldn’t even pray for us. That was when I realised something was wrong.” he added.

While some users expressed sympathy for his tale and condemned specific church practices, others cautioned against making generalisations and emphasised that there are still authentic places of worship that prioritise compassion and religion.
