Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has pledged to strengthen security measures following a reported drone incursion into the airspace over Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s Kurdistan Region.

According to a report by Anadolu Agency on Thursday, July 16, 2026, Iraqi authorities said several drones entered the area but were successfully intercepted and destroyed by security forces before they could cause further harm.

Although the government did not identify those behind the drone activity, the prime minister directed security agencies, working alongside Kurdistan regional security forces, to take all necessary steps to prevent similar incidents. He stressed that anyone attempting to threaten Iraq’s security would be stopped.

The statement followed reports of multiple explosions near the United States Consulate in Erbil on Wednesday, prompting the activation of air defense systems around the diplomatic facility as security forces responded to the situation.

Officials have not yet disclosed where the drones came from or confirmed whether the incident resulted in casualties or significant damage.

The drone breach has heightened security concerns in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region, an area that hosts foreign diplomatic missions and international military personnel. Iraqi authorities reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding the country and coordinating closely with regional officials to counter emerging threats.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, while security agencies continue reviewing airspace protection measures to prevent future drone attacks amid growing regional tensions.
