The Progressives Governors Forum (PGF) has rejected any political arrangement capable of undermining the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections, setting the stage for a potential clash with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
Wike, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with close political ties to the APC-led administration, has been promoting what he described as a “Rainbow Coalition” in Rivers State.
The arrangement is reportedly aimed at bringing together members and supporters of both the APC and PDP to work toward shared political interests in the state ahead of the 2027 elections.
APC governors reject alternative political arrangements
The governors stated their position after a closed-door meeting in Abuja on Monday, September 14.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, the APC chairman of the Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, said APC governors would not support any political arrangement that could weaken the party or its candidates.
In a communique read after the meeting, Uzodinma said the governors had unanimously agreed to support only arrangements that advance the interests of the APC and its candidates.
He said:
“The Forum unanimously resolved that its members will not participate, support or endorse any political alliance or arrangement capable of undermining the re-election of Mr President, weakening the APC or adversely affecting any candidate of the party at all levels.
In other words, the forum has no intention to support any candidate at any level that is not an APC candidate, because our candidates are being sponsored by our party.
The governors’ campaign commitment is exclusively to all APC candidates.
No arrangement that causes confusion, divided loyalty, or conflicting interest within the party will be entertained.”
Potential clash with Wike’s political strategy
The position of the APC governors could create tension with Wike’s reported Rainbow Coalition strategy in Rivers State, particularly if the arrangement involves supporting candidates outside the APC.
The governors’ declaration makes clear that their campaign commitment will remain focused on APC candidates at all levels, regardless of other political alliances or arrangements.
The development comes as political parties and influential political actors begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Rivers State expected to remain a major battleground.
