“We thought it was a scam” – Mayorkun’s mother recounts how Davido changed her son’s life

The mother of famed Nigerian musician Mayorkun has revealed how a simple cover video put online transformed her son’s life forever.

Speaking on the Talk with B podcast, she explained how she and other family members did not expect Mayorkun’s career to take off when he recorded and published a rendition of Davido’s song on social media.

“There is nothing God cannot do. We weren’t expecting it. He just left for his cousin’s place at Lekki, and when he got there, he went to the music room and was playing Davido’s song and posted it on the internet.

Before you know it, it went viral. He did a cover for ‘Money’ and posted it on Instagram, and it got to Davido,” she said.

According to her, the family was first sceptical when Davido contacted Mayorkun, suspecting it might be a fraud.

However, Mayorkun’s brother, Ayobami, maintained that the message was authentic.

“At first, they were like, ‘Is it him or not?’ But the moment they recognised his voice, they jumped in excitement. Davido told him he liked the song and asked for his measurements. Before we knew it, he sent him a whole box of gifts,” she added.

She also said that shortly after, Davido encouraged Mayorkun to create music with him, resulting in the popular song Eleko, which catapulted the singer to fame.

The happy mother stated that the song’s success changed Mayorkun’s life virtually overnight, with locals in their Ajah area even nicknaming them “Oriyami Eleko.”

The story has sparked emotions online, with many Nigerians thanking Davido for promoting fresh talent and launching Mayorkun’s great music career.
