Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has spoken out amid a federal investigation into alleged immigration fraud involving her.
The Minnesota Democrat shared a video thanking supporters for their donations and asking for more, pointing to the ‘challenging time’ she is going through.
‘Hi everyone, Ilhan here,’ she said in the video, recorded while travelling in a vehicle. ‘I just wanted to say thank you so much for the support, for everyone who sent $5, $10, $20 – that goes a long way as we fight Trump and his administration for trying to intimidate me and so many people right before the midterm elections.’
The congresswoman is under federal investigation over alleged immigration fraud, after federal agents searched her Washington, D.C., home while authorities reviewed decades-old immigration and naturalisation records.
The probe reportedly focuses on whether Omar or her late father gave false information on immigration documents when her family arrived in the United States as refugees from Somalia in 1995, or during the process that led to her becoming a U.S. citizen in 2000.
According to Reuters, the search warrant listed possible offences including conspiracy, immigration fraud, and making false statements on immigration paperwork. The investigation is being carried out by federal authorities, including Homeland Security Investigations, the investigative arm of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The Associated Press also reported that investigators seized Omar’s phone and issued grand jury subpoenas to some of her relatives as part of the inquiry.
Omar, who represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, has strongly denied any wrongdoing and accused the administration of using federal law enforcement to target political opponents.
