UCL: Stoppage time drama hand Atalanta win over Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund was eliminated from the UEFA Champions League by Atalanta in a thrilling comeback, and a penalty shot on the game’s penultimate kick guaranteed them a spot in the round of 16.

In front of their home crowd, the Italian team overcame a 2-0 deficit from the first leg in Germany with a strong first half performance.

Before the break, Davide Zappacosta added a second goal to square the score on aggregate after Gianluca Scamacca had opened the score to inspire confidence.

After halftime, Atalanta’s lead was maintained when Mario Pašalić scored in the 57th minute. Karim Adeyemi, a curling effort from Dortmund that restored parity over the two legs, appeared to have forced extra time.

After a mistake by goalie Gregor Kobel, Nikola Krstović tried to connect with a cross with seconds left in stoppage time, but defender Ramy Bensebaini caught him with a hard boot inside the penalty area.

Following a VAR review, referee José María Sánchez Martínez reviewed the pitchside monitor before awarding a penalty and giving Bensebaini a second yellow card.

In order to complete the turnaround and send Atalanta through, Lazar Samardžić stepped up and converted with ease, driving the ball into the roof of the net.
