A viral social media post describing a demanding job offer from a private school has sparked widespread debate over the poor treatment and underpayment of teachers in Nigeria.
The discussion began after an educator shared details of her recent interview experience on X (formerly Twitter), revealing what many online users described as an excessive workload paired with inadequate pay.
According to the applicant, the unnamed private school expected her to handle several subjects across multiple classes, including English for JSS 1–3, alongside Social Studies and Basic Science for JSS 2 and 3 students.
She disclosed that the position required her to take 28 periods weekly in addition to compulsory extra lessons scheduled from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM every day.
Despite the heavy responsibilities, the school reportedly offered a monthly salary of ₦58,000, which already included payment for the extra lessons.
“Walking is an Exercise”
The breaking point of the interview, however, came when the applicant attempted to negotiate her salary, citing the high cost of transportation and a 20-minute commute.
“I told him the pay is low because I’d take transport… and he said walking is an exercise,” she wrote. “I stood up, carried my CV, and walked out without saying anything.”
