“The Prophet has cautioned us against handing leadership affairs to women” – Islamic Clerics Kick as a Female emerges the Candidate for House of Reps in Katsina

Tension has reportedly emerged in parts of Katsina State following the emergence of Jamilu Abdu-Mani as the All Progressives Congress (APC) consensus candidate for the 2027 House of Representatives election in the Mani/Bindawa federal constituency.

Mrs. Abdu-Mani, who currently serves as Special Adviser to the governor on girl child education and child development, reportedly emerged after a controversial consensus process that replaced an earlier preferred candidate, Ahmad Saleh, following protests from other aspirants including incumbent lawmaker Ahmad Yusuf.

The APC’s selection process was overseen by a committee led by former governor Aminu Bello Masari alongside other party coordinators.

However, some Islamic clerics in Mani and Bindawa local government areas have openly opposed her candidacy on religious grounds.

During a sermon at Lowcost Mosque, cleric Abu Abdullahi reportedly urged constituents to reject the candidacy, citing Islamic teachings and references to Hadiths concerning leadership roles for women.

Another cleric, Usman Salisu, also called on local authorities and stakeholders to challenge the decision, arguing that appointing women into leadership positions conflicts with their interpretation of religious teachings.

The development has sparked debate online and within political circles, with many Nigerians discussing the role of women in politics, religious interpretation, and representation in leadership.
