Sunderland stun Newcastle with late derby win at St James’ Park

Sunderland defeated Newcastle United 2-1 at St James’ Park, thanks to a late goal from Brian Brobbey.

Sunderland has won their first league double over its rivals since the 2014/15 season, coming back from an early deficit in a hard contested match.

Newcastle made a good start, taking the lead in the ninth minute with Anthony Gordon.

The goal came after Luke O’Nien’s defensive blunder, when his mishandled pass was intercepted by Nick Woltemade.

The hosts attempted to increase their lead and came close before the break when Sven Botman headed against the post from a Lewis Hall ball.

Sunderland strengthened after the interval, scoring an equaliser in the 57th minute. Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale’s bad clearance resulted in continuous pressure, and Chemsdine Talbi eventually converted after Brobbey’s original effort was saved off the line by Dan Burn.

The visitors continued to threaten, with Noah Sadiki missing a chance to put them ahead by directing his shot straight at Ramsdale.

However, Sunderland finished the turnaround in stoppage time. Brobbey recovered quickly after Ramsdale parried his first shot, scoring from close range to seal the victory.

The win improves Sunderland’s form, while Newcastle must ponder on wasted opportunities after failing to build on their early control.
