A 65-year-old farmer and his sick wife were allegedly a$$aulted with wooden sticks by their two sons on a public road in Pune district, India, following a dispute over the sale of land belonging to their mother.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on August 30, has sparked concern after a video of the alleged a$$ault was shared on social media.
According to the police, the incident happened at about 6pm when Tukaram Kisan Raut and his wife, Anjana Raut, were out for a walk in their village.
The couple’s sons, identified as Sanjay Raut and Rajendra Raut, allegedly followed them in a car before abu$ing and threatening them over the sale of the land.
According to an FIR filed at the Indapur police station based on Tukaram’s complaint, the brothers allegedly demanded to know why their father had sold the property.
“They started asking Tukaram, ‘Why did you sell the land?’ They then assaulted Tukaram and Anjana with wooden sticks. Tukaram sustained injuries to his back, face, thighs and left shoulder, while Anjana was allegedly struck on her right wrist and waist,” the FIR stated.
During the alleged as$$ault, the brothers reportedly demanded that their parents reverse the land transaction and retake possession of the property.
One of the sons allegedly threatened the couple, saying, “Take back the land you have sold, otherwise we will show you what we are capable of,” according to the FIR.
Passersby reportedly gathered at the scene and alerted the police. When officers arrived, Tukaram and Anjana were taken to the Indapur sub-district hospital for medical attention.
A video recorded by some local residents during the incident was subsequently shared on social media.
Tukaram also told the police that his two sons live separately with their respective families in Malwadi No. 2, Indapur.
The police have reportedly booked Sanjay and Rajendra under charges relating to voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapons, intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace, and criminal intimidation.
The allegations are contained in the police complaint, and the case remains under investigation.
