“She broke down and refused to attend my graduation” — Man recounts worst thing family member did to him

A man has revealed an emotive story about a family incident that occurred shortly after receiving his West African Examinations Council (WAEC) results, detailing how his academic success unexpectedly affected his connection with an older relative who was living with his family.

According to the man, his cousin, who was seven years older than him and had relocated from their village to live with his family while studying for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination, had been studying alongside him during his Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination preparations.

He added that he frequently assisted her with previous questions and revision sessions, and he was overjoyed when she finally passed JAMB.

He recalled,

When my WAEC result came out and I cleared everything, I was excited and showing everyone. But immediately I showed her, she stood up and left the sitting room. The next thing we saw, she was in one corner crying, not tears of joy — real crying.”

The man stated that the incident occurred on the same day as his graduation ceremony, which his cousin had originally planned to attend.

Despite being fully dressed for the ceremony, she reportedly refused to accompany the family after seeing his results, declining to explain why.

He added, “She had already dressed up to go with us, but after seeing my result, she said she was not going again. No matter how much we asked, she refused to explain why she was crying.”

The circumstance upset the family, so his mother arranged for the cousin to return to the hamlet the following week.

The article has now spurred internet discussions about jealousy, academic pressure, and the emotional challenges that young people encounter when comparing their development to that of others.
