Sharia Law is Infiltrating Europe as We Speak — Ralph Norman Urges America to Act Decisively

U.S. Representative Ralph Norman has issued a stark warning about what he describes as the growing influence of Sharia law in Western societies, arguing that the United States must act decisively to prevent similar developments at home.

In a statement posted on his verified social media account, the South Carolina Republican claimed that “Sharia Law is infiltrating Europe as we speak,” and cautioned that “the U.S. is next” if stronger measures are not taken. Citing the conservative House Freedom Caucus, Norman said the group is pressing for policies to ban the application of Sharia law, tighten border security, and defend what he characterized as core American values.

“That’s why the @freedomcaucus is pushing to ban Sharia Law, secure our borders, and defend religious liberty, free speech, and public safety,” he wrote, concluding: “America must never surrender to radical ideologies!!”

Norman’s comments reflect a broader push among some Republican lawmakers to frame national security, immigration, and religious freedom as interconnected issues. Supporters argue that preventing the incorporation of any religious legal system into U.S. jurisprudence is essential to preserving constitutional governance. They also contend that stricter border controls are necessary to guard against extremism and protect public safety.

Civil liberties advocates and Muslim organizations, however, have long rejected claims that Sharia law poses a threat to the U.S. legal system, noting that the Constitution already prohibits the establishment of any religious law. Critics warn that rhetoric about “infiltration” risks stigmatizing Muslim communities and conflating peaceful religious practice with extremism. Legal scholars also point out that courts have repeatedly held that American law is supreme and that no parallel religious legal framework can override it.
