Real Madrid’s long-term midfield ambitions have received a huge boost after reports emerged that Chelsea may be willing to transfer Enzo Fernandez in 2026.
According to sources close to the matter, the Spanish giants are closely monitoring developments and see the Argentina international as a potential answer to their midfield’s growing structural vacuum.
The 25-year-old has been a key role at Stamford Bridge since his £106.8 million transfer from Benfica in February 2023, and he remains one of Chelsea’s most reliable performances.
Despite his value, Fernandez is no longer regarded as untouchable by the London club.
According to transfer insiders, Chelsea has issued early signals via intermediaries that a sale may be explored if their valuation is satisfied.
While the club still values Fernandez highly, financial strategy and squad realignment could pave the way for a mega-deal. Real Madrid sources say the player’s long-term future at Chelsea is uncertain beyond the current cycle.
Fernandez is said to be open to a move to Madrid, having won major club and international titles, including the 2022 World Cup, the 2024 Copa América, the UEFA Conference League, and the 2025 Club World Cup. Given Chelsea’s original investment, any sale would demand one of the largest fees ever paid in La Liga.
Internal reflection at the Bernabéu fuels interest in Fernandez as well. Madrid directors believe the team squandered a chance by failing to sign Martin Zubimendi before he moves from Real Sociedad to Arsenal in the summer of 2025.
According to prior Spanish reports, then-coach Xabi Alonso lobbied for Zubimendi’s acquisition, and the midfielder was willing to wait for Madrid.
The transfer never happened, and Arsenal benefited, with Zubimendi rapidly establishing himself as a significant role in the Premier League.
Florentino Pérez has since admitted that Madrid lacks a controlling midfielder capable of setting the tempo and providing balance. Fernandez is now regarded as an ideal candidate to fill that void.
