Pastor Emmanuel Iren, a well-known Nigerian pastor and speaker, has described a personal childhood event that inspired his lifelong determination to overcome poverty.
According to the cleric, the incident occurred while his family was struggling financially and staying at his uncle’s house.
Both families were supposed to attend a burial service outside their city, but the travel revealed the stark contrast between their realities.
“Something happened to me that made me realise poverty must never come near my family again,” he said. “We were struggling financially and living in my uncle’s house.”
He added that, while his parents had to leave the house as early as 6 a.m. to travel by car, the experience that followed lingered with him for years.
Pastor Iren noted how his uncle’s routine that day demonstrated the stark contrast between comfort and suffering.
“By 6 a.m., my parents were already at the bus park and on the road,” he recalled. “My uncle dressed up, wore his tie, took his kids to school, went to the office, came back home to eat lunch… while my parents were still on the road.”
Later that day, the disparities in access, time, and comfort became even more apparent.
He stated that the final moment that impacted his attitude occurred when his uncle boarded an aircraft after lunch.
“After lunch, he drove to the airport, boarded a flight, and arrived before my parents,” Pastor Iren said. “That day changed everything for me.”
The pastor stated that the event imprinted in him a desire to provide stability, opportunity, and security for his family, assuring that financial difficulties did not define his destiny.
