“Police told me to leave it to God after robbers took my phones” — Man says

A man has expressed concerns about public safety and accused police of malpractice after narrating his experience following a robbery in his community.

The victim, who spoke anonymously, stated that his home was burgled and that laptops and mobile phones were stolen.

He reported the incident to the police, who, he claims, demanded money before collecting his statement and asked him to identify a suspect.

As a Nigerian, I don’t feel safe living in this country. My house was robbed, and my laptop and phones were stolen. I reported the case to the police, but they collected money just to take my statement and even asked me to name a suspect. I mentioned my neighbour, and they went ahead to arrest him, then told him I was the one who accused him,” he said.

The victim further claimed that the issue deteriorated when he attempted to recover his stolen phone using tracking technology but received no assistance from law enforcement personnel.

“I later tracked my phone and went back to the station, asking them to follow me to retrieve it, but they told me to ‘leave it to God.’ I had to go alone. When I got there, the robbers told me the police had already called them,” he added.
