A suspect has reportedly been arrested and confessed to stealing more than $1,000 from several Super Falcons players at a hotel in Casablanca, Morocco.

The stolen money is expected to be returned to the players, while the suspect will face criminal proceedings.

The theft occurred on the final day of Nigeria’s training camp in Casablanca, shortly before the team relocated to Rabat for their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations group matches.

Esther Okoronkwo said she, goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defender Michelle Alozie and captain Rasheedat Ajibade were among the players whose cash disappeared from their hotel rooms.

The midfielder also accused the hotel staff of failing to handle the players’ complaints properly.

“We started talking to them and they don’t have answers. They also started being disrespectful,” Okoronkwo said while warning people against patronising the hotel.

The players’ public complaints triggered widespread reactions before Nigerian journalist and former Super Eagles media officer Colin Udoh announced a breakthrough in the investigation.

“I have been informed that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the theft at the Super Falcons’ Marriott Hotel in Casablanca and has confessed.

“Full restitution will be made to the players while the law takes its course,” Udoh said.

The Super Falcons have since moved to Rabat and returned their attention to the tournament.

Justine Madugu’s side held two training sessions at the AS FAR training ground on Sunday ahead of their opening Group C match against Malawi on Tuesday at the Al Madina Stadium.

Nigeria will also face Zambia and Egypt as they pursue a record-extending 11th African title.
