Police arrest suspect over brutal m8rder of woman in Ekiti

The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested a suspect, Ismail Tunji Ibiyeye, in connection with the alleged m8rder of a 42-year-old trader, Olaitan Amere.

Mrs. Amere, a mother of three, was reportedly h@cked to d3ath in her residence in Ajegunle, Ido-Ekiti.

According to a family member, Dare Akinola, there was an attempt to set her house on fire a day before the fatal att@ck. A passerby reportedly spotted smoke and flames coming from a window and raised an alarm, helping to prevent the fire from spreading.

However, around 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, 2026, the attackers allegedly returned and att@cked Mrs. Amere with machetes, leaving her with severe injuries to her head, face, legs, and other parts of her body.

Family sources further claimed that the a$$ailants attempted to set her body ablaze after the attack by covering it with clothes and household items. A container of petrol was also reportedly found at the scene.

Her elder sister, Funmilola Adewumi, said the family became concerned after repeated attempts to reach her by phone failed. They later traced the phone to her residence, where they discovered her lifeless body in a pool of blood.

Adewumi also alleged that the deceased had received threats before the incident.

The suspect is currently being held at the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) office in Ado-Ekiti. He is said to have been in a relationship with the deceased and reportedly works as an environmental staff member at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti. He is also said to be a native of Ofa, Kwara State.

Reports indicate that the suspect has made statements to investigators. However, police investigations are ongoing, and no court has found him guilty of any offence.

Mrs. Amere was widely known for caring for her elderly mother, who lives with a physical disability, following her separation from her husband.

The Ekiti State Police Command says investigations into the case are continuing.
