Police arrest 5 ‘Tinubu must go’ campaigners in Borno

According to a police document cited and reported by SaharaReporters, five men were arrested in Maiduguri, Borno State, for wearing T-shirts that read “Tinubu Must Go.”

Baba Aji Gremami, 44; Mustapha Abba Yemen, 28; Abbacha Mohammed Ali, 32; Adam Umar Gubio, 21; and Abdulhamid Mohammed, 21 are among those detained.

On September 29, 2026, the State Criminal Investigation Department in Maiduguri documented the issue in a First Information Report, which was then sent to the city’s Chief Magistrate Court.

The five men were accused by the police of collaborating to make the shirts and allegedly wearing them around Maiduguri’s West End Roundabout.

They are accused of thuggery, criminal conspiracy, incitement, and actions that could disturb public order.

According to police, their actions were purportedly meant to cause unrest in the neighborhood. According to reports, the charges were filed in accordance with Borno State Penal Code Sections 60, 78, 79, and 392.

The alleged incident happened on September 25, 2026, at around 11 a.m., according to the FIR.

The suspects were then ordered to face charges in court by the investigating police officer.

According to reports, suspects were remanded
According to a source cited by SaharaReporters, Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum allegedly gave state Commissioner of Police CP Naziru Abdulmajid the order to make the arrests.

The five men were subsequently brought before a court and placed under remand in a correctional facility, according to the same source.

SaharaReporters, however, stated that it had not independently verified the specifics of the court proceedings or established the terms of the remand order.

The event took place in the context of heightened political activity leading up to Nigeria’s general elections in 2027.

After returning from a trip to the US and Canada, Zulum started an APC mobilization campaign in Borno with the goal of backing President Bola Tinubu and other party candidates.

In the past, the slogan “Tinubu Must Go” has been used at demonstrations and other political events across Nigeria.

In this instance, the police report asserts that the activity was meant to disturb public order and links the accusations against the five men specifically to the manufacture and use of the T-shirts.
