“Petrol costs over ₦3,000 per litre in UK, We Are Doing Very Well Here” – Okpebholo praises Tinubu’s administration

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has compared petrol prices in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, saying Nigerians are currently paying less for the product than motorists in the UK.

Okpebholo made the remark on Thursday, September 24, 2026, while speaking at the “Operation Rescue Benin-Asaba Road” event in Edo State.

The governor said he travelled to London the previous week and decided to compare the cost of petrol in the UK with what Nigerians pay at home.

“When we complained about the cost of petrol, I was in London last week. I told my friend, ‘Let’s go and buy fuel just to know the cost of fuel between Nigeria and England.’ Let me tell you, after conversion, it’s about ₦3,000-something for one litre of fuel.”

Based on his comparison, Okpebholo said petrol was still cheaper in Nigeria.

“We are doing very well here. The President is stabilising the economy. He’s an economist.”

Current Petrol Prices in Nigeria

The governor’s comments come amid renewed concerns over rising petrol prices and the wider cost of living.

Recent reports put petrol prices at around ₦1,400 per litre in Lagos and Abuja, with some locations recording prices of up to ₦1,500 per litre. NNPC’s latest listed prices were reported at ₦1,385 per litre in Lagos and ₦1,430 in Abuja, although pump prices vary by location and outlet.

Okpebholo Defends Economic Reforms

The governor also defended the economic reforms being implemented by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, describing them as difficult but necessary.

He urged Nigerians to remain patient, expressing confidence that the reforms would eventually produce results.

Okpebholo compared the situation to an aircraft taking off, saying passengers would have to wait until the plane reaches cruising altitude before enjoying certain benefits.

“I want to let you know, very soon Nigeria will be on the cruising level. Nigeria will be on a cruising level.”

He also pointed to ongoing road projects as evidence of development under the current administration.

The governor’s remarks have renewed discussion online about petrol prices, economic reforms and whether comparing pump prices between countries provides a complete picture of how affordable fuel is to ordinary citizens. Recent reporting has noted that factors such as wages, transport costs and other living expenses also affect fuel affordability.
