Peter Obi No Longer a Factor in Presidential Race – Kenneth Okonkwo

According to a report published by DAILY POST on Thursday, July 2, 2026, newly appointed spokesperson for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Kenneth Okonkwo, has downplayed the political significance of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi as discussions surrounding the 2027 general election continue.

Okonkwo made the remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, where he declined to comment extensively on Obi’s political future. Instead, he emphasized that his current responsibility is to represent the interests of the ADC presidential candidate and focus on individuals he considers genuine contenders in the upcoming presidential race.

Explaining his position, Okonkwo said his attention was no longer on Obi’s political decisions, stressing that he preferred to discuss candidates he regarded as serious participants in the 2027 election.

“I have just been appointed spokesperson to Atiku Abubakar, so Peter Obi is inconsequential in whatever he decides to do with his life; Let us discuss more important issues,” he said.

Okonkwo also suggested that his interest lies in addressing matters concerning those actively competing for the presidency rather than politicians he believes are no longer significant in the contest. Reinforcing his view, he remarked, “How can you bring down someone who is already down?”

His comments came shortly after Atiku Abubakar, the ADC’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, officially announced him as his spokesperson on Thursday. The appointment places Okonkwo at the forefront of the party’s communication efforts as preparations for the next presidential election gather momentum.

The remarks have attracted attention within political circles, particularly because of the longstanding relationship between Okonkwo and Peter Obi during previous political engagements. However, his latest statements indicate a shift in focus following his new role within the ADC campaign structure.

As political parties continue to position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections, comments from key figures such as Okonkwo are expected to generate further debate about the evolving alliances, rivalries, and strategies that will shape the country’s political landscape in the months leading up to the polls.
