Osayi-Samuel found guilty by Turkish court over Trabzon incident

A Turkish court found Bright Osayi-Samuel guilty of assault for his involvement in a violent pitch invasion following a league match between Trabzonspor and Fenerbahce in 2024.

The verdict was issued by Trabzon’s 3rd Criminal Court of First Instance, bringing an end to a lengthy legal process involving the incident.

The court convicted Osayi-Samuel of “simple assault” and fined him 6,000 Turkish Lira (about €116). Former teammates Jayden Oosterwolde and Irfan Can Egribayat were also punished, with Oosterwolde getting two separate fines for several offences.

However, the court imposed a five-year postponement of the verdict’s enforcement. According to Turkish legislation, the punishment will not be administered or recorded if no future violations are committed during that time period.

The case comes from chaotic incidents on March 17, 2024, when Trabzonspor fans stormed the pitch at Papara Park following a 3-2 loss.

Osayi-Samuel was observed punching a supporter during the altercation, claiming throughout that he acted in self-defence due to worries over player safety.

According to reports at the time, some fans were carrying objects, which raised anxiety during the incident.

The incident became one of the most prominent issues in Turkish football that season, prompting both legal and disciplinary investigations.

Since the event, Osayi-Samuel has left Fenerbahce and is now playing for Birmingham City, returning to England in 2025.

Despite injury setbacks, he remains a member of the squad and continues to play for the Super Eagles, where he is admired for his flexibility and defensive abilities.

The court’s judgement effectively closes the legal chapter on the incident, allowing the athlete to proceed without immediate consequences.
