Chelsea have reinforced their defensive options by signing Italian defender Marco Palestra from Serie A club Atalanta for £43 million.
The Premier League winners confirmed the arrival of the 21-year-old as they prepare for the upcoming season under manager Xabi Alonso.
Palestra joins Chelsea after impressing on loan at Cagliari, where he got crucial top-flight experience before securing a move to Stamford Bridge.
Defender arrives following a breakthrough campaign.
Palestra joined Atalanta’s academy in 2014, moving up through the club’s youth ranks until making his senior debut in December 2023.
He spent the season on loan at Cagliari, making 37 Serie A games. During that time, he scored once and assisted four times, cementing his status as one of Italy’s most promising young defenders.
His achievements earned him his senior international debut for Italy in a World Cup qualifying match against Northern Ireland in March.
The transfer to Chelsea is the next step in his development after obtaining regular first-team experience in Italy’s top flight.
Palestra has usually played as a wing-back, but Chelsea believes his versatility in defensive positions makes him an important addition to the squad.
Manager Xabi Alonso is anticipated to utilise the Italian on both flanks, either as an aggressive wing-back or as a deeper full-back, depending on the tactical situation.
His adaptability is seen as one of the primary reasons for Chelsea’s decision to invest on the young defender, who is expected to compete for a spot in the first squad right away.
The transfer follows Chelsea’s aim of bringing in young players who can develop into long-term starters while also reinforcing crucial areas of the squad.
Palestra now joins the London club ahead of the 2026-27 season, where he hopes to establish himself in the Premier League and advance his career.
