An anti-drug operation turned deadly when a Nigerian national was shot dead in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, a Johannesburg suburb in South Africa.
The operation, which involved a political party and ActionSA’s Ekurhuleni Mayoral candidate, Councillor Xolani Khumalo, took place on Sunday, February 8, 2026.
According to an eyewitness, the Nigerian was caught sleeping in his car and terrified when he woke up to see a stranger on the bonnet, so he attempted to drive away, believing it was a hijacking. He was shot during the process.
ActionSA confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday, saying that “during an anti-drug operation yesterday, joined by ActionSA’s Ekurhuleni Mayoral Candidate, Cllr Xolani Khumalo, a shooting incident occurred in which a Nigerian suspect, identified as being involved in drug trafficking, was sh0t” Khumalo released the statement in his role as ActionSA’s Ekurhuleni Mayoral candidate.
Meanwhile, a group of Nigerian nationals gathered at Linden Police Station and demanded Khumalo’s arrest.
