A viral social media video has stirred outrage after a Nigerian couple openly tore up their marriage certificate during their wedding ceremony.
The strange event, which occurred shortly after the certificate was given, has sparked debate on several internet platforms, with many questioning its significance and ramifications.
In the video, the pair is seen holding what appears to be their marriage certificate before tearing it up.
The incident apparently occurred at the wedding location, shortly after the legal documents was handed over to them.
The video’s source claims that the couple’s actions were symbolic. It was claimed to symbolise their conviction that divorce would never be an option in their marriage.
Guests at the ceremony were heard cheering loudly as both partners tore the documents, which were thought to be two copies of the certificate.
Despite the joyous atmosphere during the occasion, the gesture has continued to divide opinion online.
Many social media users have attacked the act, calling it superfluous and lacking practical usefulness.

AfcxOfficial raised concerns about the importance of the document, stating: “But marriage certificate is more than keeping for divorced, what if they want to travel out of country as a couple or is needed to prove a point, anyways this don’t sound alright to me. Wish them best.”
FETWAB also criticised the move, saying: “People go just dey mumu up and down. Is the certificate only meant for divorce purposes. I’ll blame the mumu hubby the more, if the wife wants to act stupid it’s job to guide her.”
