Reports tying Eric Chelle to the vacant Morocco national football team coaching position have been denied by the Super Eagles’ media officer.
Officials from the Nigeria Football Federation tried to put an end to speculation that the Super Eagles coach will resign his position to lead the Atlas Lions.
According to Soccernet, Super Eagles media officer Promise Efoghe dismissed the reports as “fake” and confirmed Chelle’s status as head coach of the Nigeria national football team.
The reports surfaced after Morocco parted ways with manager Walid Regragui last week, as they begin their search for a new coach ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Morocco hopes to build on their historic semi-final performance in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Chelle has sparked growing interest since leading Nigeria to third place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite the podium finish, some supporters and analysts thought that the squad had the potential to fight for the crown.
In recent months, the former Mali national football team coach has been linked to many vacancies across Africa, including positions in Algeria, Tunisia, and Angola.
He was also considered as a prospective contender for Olympique de Marseille following Roberto De Zerbi’s resignation earlier this year.
While the Morocco speculation has been denied, there is still question over Chelle’s long-term future in Nigeria.
The coach is entering the final year of his contract, and negotiations for an extension have yet to yield results.
Chelle recently stated that a leaked list of his contract requests was correct, although it is unclear whether the Nigeria Football Federation has moved closer to meeting those criteria.
