Meta lays off 8,000 employees as A.I. restructuring accelerates

Meta Platforms has reportedly laid off around 8,000 employees as part of a large-scale internal restructuring focused on transforming the company into an artificial intelligence-driven organisation.

The job cuts, said to represent about 10% of Meta’s global workforce, reportedly affected staff across regions including Asia, Europe, and the United States, with employees receiving notification emails early in the morning.

The restructuring comes as CEO Mark Zuckerberg continues pushing the company toward aggressive A.I. development, repeatedly describing artificial intelligence as the most important technology shaping Meta’s future.

Alongside the layoffs, the company reportedly reassigned about 7,000 workers to new A.I.-focused projects, reflecting broader operational changes tied to automation and advanced computing initiatives.

Reports also indicate that the transition has created tension internally, with some employees expressing concerns about job security, increased reliance on A.I. systems, and internal data collection practices connected to A.I. development and training. Petitions were also said to be circulating among workers demanding greater transparency over how employee data is being used.

Despite the workforce reduction, Meta is continuing to invest heavily in artificial intelligence, with plans to spend more than $100 billion this year on A.I. infrastructure, research, and product development as competition intensifies among global tech companies.

Zuckerberg defended the restructuring, arguing that companies leading in A.I. will shape the next generation of technology and digital services. He acknowledged concerns among employees but maintained that the transition is necessary for the company’s long-term competitiveness.

Affected workers are reportedly being offered severance packages that include several months of salary alongside additional compensation based on years of service.
