Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez says he hopes to be back in action “in a few weeks” after fracturing his jaw during Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton.
The 34-year-old Argentine sustained the injury following a second-half collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Martinez received treatment for about eight minutes on the pitch before being stretchered off and taken to the hospital. Chelsea later confirmed he had undergone successful surgery.
The goalkeeper gave an update on Sunday, sharing a photo of himself in a hospital gown and thanking fans for their well wishes.
“Thanks to everyone for the messages. The operation went well,” Martinez wrote.
“The most important thing is that we won, and kept a clean sheet. In a few weeks we’ll be back.”
Martinez’s absence is set to hand Mike Penders an extended spell in Chelsea’s first team, with the 21-year-old expected to start at least the club’s next three games.
Penders came on for Martinez against Everton to make his Premier League debut and is now set to feature against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in the league, as well as Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.
Chelsea signed the Belgian goalkeeper from Genk for £17 million in 2024. He has already played in cup competitions, giving the club a glimpse of his qualities before this opportunity.
Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso backed Penders after his outing against Everton, praising his character and willingness to step up.
“Mike has personality. He’s brave and we have full trust with him. He did well when he came on,” Alonso said.
The manager also emphasized the need for a squad that can rise to the occasion when injuries open up opportunities for others.
“It’s all about the squad – that all the players feel important and can have their moment whenever they are needed, and that’s very positive,” he added.
Chelsea will be hoping Penders can sustain the defensive solidity they displayed against Everton as Martinez begins his recovery.
