legislating for when the country is running in blood?” — Alhassan Ado Doguwa

Legislative activity has become pointless as Nigerians continue to lose their lives on a daily basis, according to a politician who has urged for the National Assembly to be shut down due to the growing insecurity around Nigeria.

Speaking at a plenary session of the Nigerian House of Representatives, Representative Alhassan Ado Doguwa called on lawmakers to incur what he called the “supreme cost” of halting legislative work until the Federal Government takes decisive action to safeguard people’s lives and property nationwide.

Doguwa maintained that the federal government bears the major duty for security, emphasising that the level of violence in the country necessitates drastic steps from legislators who represent impacted communities.

“If the government is not prepared to actually do the right thing that will protect the lives and property of our people, I urge this honourable House to stand up and pay the supreme cost, which is to shut this House down and wait until the right thing is done,” he said.

The congressman denied that religion, politics, or ethnicity are the main causes of Nigeria’s insecurity crisis, characterising it as a concerted effort to undermine the Nigerian government in advance of the general elections in 2027.

This insecurity is not religious, it is not political, and it has nothing to do with tribe. It is a calculated attempt to demoralise the Nigerian state, and if care is not taken, all of us will have questions to answer,” Doguwa stated.

He also questioned the need for legislation in light of the pervasive fear, hunger, and violence in many areas.

Declare a legislative emergency. Close the House. Who are you legislating for? What laws are you making when the country is running in blood and tears?” he asked.

Farmers cannot go to their farms, traders cannot go to the market, and worshippers cannot go to churches or mosques. So what exactly are we doing here?”

As attacks continue to damage livelihoods across the country, the comments highlight mounting pressure on the Tinubu administration to confront insecurity.
