Lawyer Urges Davido to Apologise to Okpebholo Over WAEC Result Post

According to a report by The Punch on Thursday, August 13, 2026, legal practitioner and author Timothy Tugbiyele has urged Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, to apologise to Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo over a social media post involving the governor’s alleged West African Examinations Council (WAEC) result.

Tugbiyele made the call while reacting to the growing political exchanges among supporters of various political figures ahead of the August 15 Osun State governorship election.

The controversy began after Okpebholo criticised Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke over his public dancing and leadership style during a campaign event.

In response, Davido, who has been openly supporting Adeleke’s bid for re-election, shared what appeared to be Okpebholo’s WAEC result on his Instagram Story.

Reacting to the development, Tugbiyele argued that Davido should not have personally responded to the Edo governor’s remarks. According to him, if Adeleke considered Okpebholo’s comments inappropriate, the matter could have been addressed through official government channels rather than allowing the singer to engage the governor directly.

The lawyer further maintained that even if the academic result being circulated was genuine and reflected poor performance, it should not be used as a tool to ridicule or embarrass Okpebholo.

Tugbiyele described Davido’s action as inappropriate and disrespectful, urging the singer to demonstrate humility by apologising to the Edo governor.

He also stressed that political disagreements should not degenerate into personal attacks, noting that criticism and political rivalry should remain within the bounds of civility and respect.

According to the lawyer, a person’s academic performance at an earlier stage of life should not be used to define their achievements or determine their present status. He pointed out that Okpebholo currently occupies the position of governor, regardless of his past academic record.

Tugbiyele also appealed to Davido’s elders and other respected individuals to advise the singer, warning that political rivalry should not be allowed to escalate into personal insults or unnecessary confrontations.

The controversy comes amid heightened political activities in Osun State ahead of Saturday’s governorship election. Davido has openly campaigned in support of Governor Ademola Adeleke, while Okpebholo has been supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji.

Tugbiyele concluded by urging Davido to apologise to Okpebholo and called on politicians, entertainers and their supporters to maintain decorum and respect despite their political differences.
