King Charles III and Queen Camilla have been joined by Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham at a traditional Sunday church service near Balmoral in Scotland.

The royal couple were seen travelling to Crathie Kirk in the back of a black Rolls-Royce, with the Prime Minister’s Range Rover following closely behind.

The service took place at Crathie Kirk, a small granite church located on Royal Deeside and traditionally attended by members of the Royal Family during their stays at Balmoral.

Prime Minister joins royal couple

It is traditional for the Prime Minister to spend a few days at Balmoral towards the end of summer, where King Charles has also been spending his summer break.

Burnham’s appearance at the service comes just days after he joined the King and French President Emmanuel Macron during a visit to see the Bayeux Tapestry.

During Wednesday’s event, Charles described the historic medieval artwork as a “precious symbol of trust” between nations as he welcomed Macron to Britain.

The King and the French president were joined by Burnham at the British Museum, where they viewed the 70-metre-long embroidery.

Historic Bayeux Tapestry exhibition

The Bayeux Tapestry is being loaned to Britain by France for the first time in its nearly 1,000-year history.

The landmark exhibition, which opens to the public next week, is being seen as a significant moment in Anglo-French relations following years of negotiations to bring the extraordinarily fragile artwork across the English Channel.

The royal couple’s appearance at Crathie Kirk continues the traditional Balmoral summer routine, with the King spending his annual break at the Scottish estate.
