In a stunning turn of events, two men accused of kidnapping a medical doctor and his brother in Edo State were caught at the Edo State University Teaching Hospital in Auchi.
The arrest occurred early Sunday when Abu Ibrahim, a doctor, apparently spotted the suspects at the hospital where he works.
The men had come to the hospital to check on a sick newborn girl who was being treated in the emergency department.
While performing his duty, Ibrahim recognised them as members of the gang that once kidnapped him and his brother. Eno Ikoedem, the Police Public Relations Officer, named the accused as Idris Abubakar and Sani Abubakar in a statement.
He quickly contacted security personnel, resulting in their arrest at the hospital.
The doctor and his brother, Abu Tahir, were kidnapped in January from Igbira Camp in Auchi, near a military base.
The kidnappers reportedly sought ₦100 million in ransom. During the encounter, the younger brother was supposedly killed after attempting to flee. The doctor was eventually released after millions of naira were paid.
According to sources, before to their detention, the suspects were seen roaming around Auchi town with two people dressed in military uniforms.
This sparked community worry and heightened suspicions about the growing number of kidnappings in Auchi and other districts of Edo North.
Community leaders, including Alhaji Rilwanu Bonvist Oshiobugie and Igbe’s Daudu, Chief Yekini Sado, welcomed the arrest as a huge breakthrough.
They demanded a thorough investigation to identify other members of the kidnapping network operating in the area.
The leaders complimented Governor Monday Okpebholo, pointing out that his security measures are starting to yield excellent results.
Following the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, directed that the suspects be taken to the State Police Command Headquarters for further investigation.
