Amid a worsening cost-of-living crisis, young people in Kenya have taken to the streets in new protests against rising fuel prices. Demonstrations have been reported in parts of Nairobi and other regions.

The demonstrations, which were mostly led by youth, were organized online using the hashtag # RejectFuelPrices began on Tuesday, April 21, while the capital was heavily guarded by security personnel.

Due to a lack of official notification, authorities had earlier declared the protests to be “unlawful,” laying the groundwork for potential conflicts.

Despite the warnings, groups of protesters gathered in the city centre and surrounding areas, with reports of arrests and police attempts to disperse crowds.
