It is Within my Right to Campaign and Fight Against the Emergence of Peter Obi – Asari Dokubo

As Nigeria gradually moves toward the 2027 general elections, political conversations and alignments continue to gain momentum across the country. Various political figures, activists, and opinion leaders have begun expressing their positions regarding potential candidates and the direction they believe the nation should take in the coming years.

One of the latest voices to weigh in on the evolving political landscape is Niger Delta activist and traditional ruler, Asari Dokubo, who has openly declared his intention to oppose the emergence of former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the next presidential contest.

Dokubo made the remarks in a video shared on Facebook on Saturday, May 30, 2026, where he discussed issues surrounding democratic participation, political engagement, and the rights of citizens to support or oppose political aspirants.

Speaking during the video, Dokubo emphasized that political competition is a fundamental feature of democracy and that every citizen has the freedom to advocate for their preferred candidates while opposing others through lawful means.

According to him, “It is within my right to campaign and fight against the emergence of Peter Obi.”

He further defended his position by stressing that political pluralism allows citizens to freely express their preferences and disagreements without fear of intimidation.

Dokubo said, “Democracy gives me the right to support whoever I want to support and oppose whoever I want to oppose. Nobody can take that right away from me.”

The outspoken activist maintained that his position should not be interpreted as an attack on democratic principles but rather as an exercise of the freedoms guaranteed to citizens in a democratic society. He argued that political campaigns naturally involve competing interests, ideologies, and preferences, with different individuals and groups supporting candidates they believe can best lead the country.

According to him, “If somebody has the right to campaign for Peter Obi, I also have the right to campaign against Peter Obi. That is what democracy is all about.”

Dokubo noted that democracy thrives when citizens actively participate in political debates and electoral processes. He stressed that people should not be intimidated or criticized simply because they choose to support one candidate over another or campaign against a rival political figure.

He stated, “You cannot force everybody to support one candidate. People will have different opinions, and they have the constitutional right to express those opinions.” he added.
