In response to the controversy surrounding the recently ended Osun State governorship election, social commentator and businessman Isaac Fayose bemoaned the purported death toll and the enormous sums allegedly spent by political parties.

Fayose claimed on his Instagram page that 29 people had died as a result of the election and attacked Governor Ademola Adeleke for supposedly siding with the same political forces that he claimed had previously opposed him.

“Osun State, 29 people don kpai for Adeleke, say they no go take him state from him. The Adeleke now is with the oppressor they fought. What a country,” he said.

Conflicting claims on the purported amount of money spent during the election were another issue that Fayose brought up.

His remarks coincide with accusations made by the brother of the current governor, Adedeji Adeleke, that the APC spent over ₦60 billion on the election, while former governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, allegedly claimed that the Accord Party spent roughly ₦40 billion.

He wondered what would have been accomplished if such enormous sums had instead gone into empowerment, education, and poverty eradication.

“So between Accord and APC, they spent ₦100 billion for the election. How many schools? How many empowerment can ₦100 billion give you?

If you share ₦100 billion, ₦1 million each to people, you know how many people you will touch? Wey go fit feed themselves,” he added.

Fayose went on to say that while politicians and their supporters continue to profit from excessive political spending, regular Nigerians ultimately face the repercussions.
