Australia has confirmed that an Iranian missile struck near a military airbase in the United Arab Emirates where its troops are stationed.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that the incident occurred near the Al Minhad base, which houses more than 100 Australian military personnel.
According to Albanese, the strike started a fire, which damaged parts of an accommodation block and a medical facility on the base. However, he stated that no Australian personnel were injured.
An Iranian projectile reportedly struck a nearby road, but authorities have yet to determine whether it was a missile or a drone.
Albanese said it remains unclear whether the base was deliberately targeted, while stressing that Australia is not at war.
“The Iranian regime is conducting indiscriminate attacks throughout the region. We are aware of this,” he said.
The incident marks the second time the base has come under attack in recent weeks, following an earlier Iranian drone strike at the early stage of the conflict.
