After giving direct advice on what to do in the event that a partner unexpectedly passes away in your home, a Nigerian lawyer sparked outrage on social media.
The attorney cautioned in a widely shared video on TikTok that even if someone is totally innocent, panicking and fleeing could ruin their life forever.
He warned in the video that leaving the scene right away raises suspicions about the person involved.
“Don’t run. Don’t run. If you run, it will automatically be presumed that you are guilty, and it will become very difficult to prove your innocence,” he said.
He claims that law enforcement officials are more likely to assume wrongdoing as soon as someone flees such a situation, which makes the legal process much more difficult.
He also warned against tampering with the scene, stressing that people should never touch the body, clean bloodstains, or wipe any surface.
The lawyer explained that altering the scene could easily be interpreted as an attempt to destroy evidence, which may lead to serious legal consequences, including imprisonment.
Emphasising the importance of timing, he advised that the police should be contacted immediately once the incident occurs.
Delaying a report, even briefly, could raise suspicion and weaken one’s position, while prompt reporting shows good faith and transparency.
He further advised that a lawyer should be contacted immediately after calling the police to avoid making statements under pressure or saying anything that could later be used against the individual in court.
According to him, if the police arrive before legal counsel, there is only one statement that should be made.
“She passed away and I reported immediately. That’s all. Don’t say anything else unless your lawyer is present,” he added.
The video has sparked widespread discussion online, with many Nigerians describing the advice as frightening but necessary.
