“If you come from a poor home, don’t study these courses” — Man warns students about degrees with low financial returns

After urging students from low-income homes to carefully assess their academic course choices and spotlighting degrees he believes provide limited prospects for financial success, a man has generated controversy on social media.

Microbiology, political science, religious studies, animal science, biochemistry, environmental biology, law, sociology, history, agriculture, mathematics and statistics, and pharmacy are just a few of the university courses that the man mentioned as being “almost useless in Nigeria” for people who want to succeed solely through academics.

He cautioned that although these courses may appear distinguished, students from less affluent households seldom become financially independent as a result of them.

He told students: “Before you argue this, check those you know who studied these courses. Leave emotions and use your head.”

Many people who believe that employability and market demand should be taken into account when choosing a vocation rather than just status or personal passion have found resonance in this statement.

Since then, the post has gone viral, with other internet users commenting on the applicability of specific degrees in Nigeria.

While some detractors contend that all education is valuable, others concur that prospective students should give priority to courses that are more likely to result in steady employment and secure income.

The argument brings to light persistent worries about the gap between academic programs and actual employment prospects in the nation.
