A guy has generated debate online after disputing the widely held belief that having a first-class degree has little impact on financial success or professional options after university.

The graduate recalled that while working hard to retain a first-class university grade, many people advised him that academic success would not determine his financial destiny. However, he insisted on not being discouraged by the advise.

According to him, graduating with a first class in 2017 was a watershed moment, paving the way for chances that finally led to his travelling abroad on a full scholarship.

The graduate said, “After school, you will realise that succeeding financially has nothing to do with first class…”

He added that, despite hearing the comment several times during his undergraduate years, he stayed committed to his studies.

Later, he added, “First class l’awa njẹ oo (Nah first class I dey chop o).”

He further stated, “If I hadn’t graduated with a first class in 2017, I’m almost certain nothing would have taken me out of Nigeria on a funded scholarship or opened the doors to the opportunities I’ve enjoyed over the last six years abroad.”Africans & Diaspora

The graduate reminded current undergraduates not to let negative comments derail their academic aspirations, emphasising that while a first-class degree does not ensure financial success, it can open up opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach.

His views have elicited a mixed response online, with some users acknowledging that academic brilliance frequently leads to scholarships, postgraduate admittance, and competitive employment.

Others contended that, while a first-class degree is useful, success ultimately comes down to a combination of talents, experience, opportunity, and determination.
