Former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi has spoken about national unity and citizenship in Nigeria amid reports linking him to a possible presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking during an interview with journalists, Amaechi stated that if elected president, he would abolish the concept of indigeneship and ensure that all Nigerians are treated equally as citizens of the federation, regardless of tribe or region.

The former minister also urged Nigerians to stop defining themselves primarily through ethnicity, religion, or regional identity, insisting that the country’s unity should come before all other divisions.

Amaechi further criticised politicians who rely on ethnic or religious sentiments to secure votes, arguing that such style of politics should no longer have a place in the country.

“If I become president, I will abolish indigeneship and allow only citizenship. Every Nigerian will be a member of the federation,” Romiti stated.

“We are first and foremost citizens of Nigeria. All this ‘I’m from the North, East, West and South,’ and calling people to vote for you based on religion and ethnicity, wouldn’t happen,” he added.

The statement has since sparked conversations online, with many Nigerians reacting to his views on national identity, politics, and unity ahead of the 2027 elections.
