An elderly woman has provoked passionate reactions online after disclosing why she never married: her youth was absorbed by the responsibilities of caring for her brothers.
In a now-viral video broadcast on April 12, 2026, the woman said that she spent her childhood going to numerous locales in quest of job.
According to her, survival and family commitments took precedence over personal ambitions, leaving her with few opportunities to construct her own home or marry.
Her narrative has elicited diverse emotions, with some sympathising with her sacrifices and others questioning her decisions.
“I didn’t get married because, during my youth, I was doing oringo and hustling to feed my siblings. That was my focus at the time,” she said, noting that her efforts extended beyond her immediate environment as she searched for better opportunities.
She added, “My life was not really about what I wanted but what I had to do. I had people depending on me, and I had to survive first before thinking of anything else.“
The development coincides with existing discussions in Nigeria regarding family pressure and personal sacrifice.
In recent years, other such stories have emerged online, exposing how economic difficulty has caused many young people to postpone or cancel personal milestones such as marriage in order to support relatives.
