A Nigerian woman has shared a heartwarming story of how a man whose romantic advances she initially rejected while they were in university eventually became her husband.
In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), the woman explained that although she liked him, she did not initially have strong enough feelings to consider dating him.
Despite their differences in romantic expectations, the pair maintained their friendship throughout their university years. During that period, she dated other people while he remained someone she could always turn to for understanding and emotional support.
According to her, he understood her regardless of what she was going through, making him an important part of her life even when they were not romantically involved.
The woman explained that their relationship began to take a different turn in 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdown, when they continued communicating regularly.
Over time, she realised that her feelings for him had changed and that she wanted them to become more than friends.
She eventually told him that they could no longer continue their friendship if they were unwilling to pursue a romantic relationship.
Recounting the conversation, she said:
“I said, ‘You know what? If we don’t date, we can’t be friends again.’ So we had this one week where we’re not talking to each other, which was very weird, actually. We’ve not gone one week without talking to each other since the ten years we’ve known each other.’”
According to the woman, the man was initially reluctant to accept her proposal because he felt she had broken his heart several times in the past.
She recalled telling him that she could no longer continue the friendship while having romantic feelings for him, particularly if he was unwilling to move beyond their previous experiences.
She said:
“‘You know, if we don’t date, we can’t talk again because I have feelings for you now.’ But he was like, ‘No, you broke my heart several times. I’m not going to date you.’”
Despite his initial refusal, the pair eventually realised how important they had become to each other.
She explained that their inability to remain apart ultimately paved the way for them to begin dating in 2020.
“‘I can’t do this. If you can’t get past what has happened, let’s stop being friends.’ And so we did get to this point where we realised that we can’t do without each other, and that’s how we started dating in 2020,” she added.
The woman’s story has generated interest online, highlighting how feelings can change over time and how a longstanding friendship can develop into a romantic relationship.
Her experience also illustrates the importance of communication, emotional connection and the willingness of both parties to reconsider their relationship when their feelings evolve.
What began as a friendship between two university students eventually developed into a romantic relationship and, ultimately, marriage.
