“I have ₦3.5 million saved, and I’m seriously considering giving my fiancé ₦1.5 million to help cover my own bride price.

A woman has caused debate after disclosing that she is considering using her personal savings to help her fiancé pay for her wedding.

The woman, who disclosed her dilemma anonymously, said she had ₦3.5 million saved and is willing to contribute ₦1.5 million to help her spouse.

According to her, the choice is motivated by escalating costs of conventional marital rites and pressure from her family, notably her father, who insists on keeping the entire list.

“I have ₦3.5 million saved and I’m thinking of giving my fiancé ₦1.5 million to pay my own bride price. He loves me, he just can’t afford it right now. My family’s list is too much for where he is financially,” she said.

She added that, while her mother attempted to negotiate a reduction, her father was adamantly opposed to any adjustments, causing friction in the family.

The woman stated that her position has elicited conflicting reactions from people around her, with many cautioning her against violating cultural standards.

She admits to feeling torn between her love for her partner, respect for tradition, and the practical solution her savings give.

Everyone says it’s taboo for a woman to fund her own bride price. My mother knows, but I can’t tell my father. I feel stuck between doing what’s right culturally and helping the man I love,” she added.

Similar discussions have erupted in recent years as economic realities test long-held marital practices across Nigeria.
