A Nigerian woman’s account of the unpleasant and humiliating experience she had when her card was rejected at a restaurant has caused a stir on social media.
According to the tweet posted on X (previously Twitter) by @freakin_snow, she disclosed that her card failed during payment after she finished her lunch, drawing attention from others nearby right away.
“The attendant and some ladies started looking at me somehow. One woman even said, ‘That’s how they go around disgracing themselves, jobless girls looking for men to pay their bills,” she said.
She disclosed that after a man intervened to cover the cost of her supper, things soon took an awkward turn.
She told him she was already in a relationship when the man asked for her number after aiding her.
“He asked for my number and I told him I was in a relationship. He flipped and started asking why I didn’t call my boyfriend to help me out. He started calling me names,” she added.
Overwhelmed by the situation, she said she had to leave immediately, vowing never to return to the restaurant again.
Many reactions have followed her revelation. One user wrote, “That’s so embarrassing. Gosh😭.” Another added, “Just because he paid 50k? He shouldn’t have acted like that.”
Online discussions on entitlement, public humiliation, and the idea that deeds of charity shouldn’t have conditions have been triggered by her narrative.
