A Nigerian woman has shared a hilarious account of how her mother reacted after finding her son-in-law cleaning their home while her daughter was still asleep, sparking a disagreement over household chores and expectations of a good wife.

The woman explained that her mother had been staying with her family for five weeks and was surprised to discover that her husband regularly took responsibility for cleaning their home, particularly on Saturdays.

According to her, the arrangement had worked peacefully since they got married, with her husband handling the cleaning while she prepared breakfast, cooked for the weekend and attended to other responsibilities.

However, her mother’s first Saturday visit exposed the arrangement, leaving the older woman questioning her daughter’s role in maintaining the household.

Recounting the incident, the woman said her mother woke up one Saturday morning to find her husband cleaning the house.

When she asked whether her daughter had gone to work, her son-in-law reportedly explained that she was still sleeping.

The response allegedly upset her mother, who questioned why her daughter had not woken up to help her husband.

“How can your husband be cleaning while you’re sleeping?” she reportedly asked.

The daughter said she innocently responded:

“Mummy, help him with what?”

Her response reportedly prompted another dramatic reaction from her mother.

Her husband eventually intervened, explaining that he enjoyed cleaning and that the arrangement was normal in their home.

Although her mother accepted her son-in-law’s explanation, the woman said she continued receiving disapproving looks from her whenever Saturday cleaning time came around.

Defending their arrangement, she said:

“Mummy, I promise you, I’m not suffering from laziness. We simply have a system that works for us.”

She added that her mother appeared to believe a good wife should wake up early, clean the house and supervise household chores, even when her husband was willing to handle them.

The woman’s account has highlighted differing views about marriage and domestic responsibilities, particularly the contrast between traditional expectations and modern approaches to sharing household duties.
