“He says I’m too successful, so he’s taking a second wife for balance” — Woman laments

A woman revealed a distressing aspect of her marriage when her husband told her that he planned to pursue a second wife, blaming her focus on her career as the cause.

The revelation has spurred discussion about expectations for marriage, gender roles, and how successful women are treated in partnerships.

Speaking to a neighbour with tears in her eyes, she described the startling incident:

Neighbor, my husband called a family meeting yesterday. I thought we were discussing the kids’ school fees. Instead, he sat me down in front of his brothers and told me he’s taking a second wife. His reason? He said I’ve become ‘too focused on my career’ and he needs someone who is ‘homebound’ to balance the house.”

She described the sacrifices she made for their family and house, emphasising how blatantly unfair her husband’s choice was:

I’m the one who paid for the renovation of this house. I’m the one who bought the car he’s currently driving to go and see this other woman. He told me if I’m truly a ‘submissive’ wife, I should welcome her like a sister. If I complain, it means I’m trying to ‘compete’ with his authority.”

Her experience calls into question how, in marriages where patriarchal expectations are high, women’s career success is occasionally perceived as a threat.

The woman confessed her heartbreak, asking: “How do you welcome a woman into a house you built with your own sweat? Is this what they mean by ‘for better for worse’?”

Her story brings to light the unequal power relations in marriages and the emotional toll that polygamy takes.
