A video of a traditional Urhobo marriage ritual sparked considerable comments on social media after an elder gave a bride culturally rooted marital advise during the ceremony.

The video shows the bride in a patterned traditional attire conducting ceremonial procedures in front of elders and family members.

The ritual was held outdoors at the entrance to a family house, with elders dressed in red hats, beads, and traditional robes.

The rite included bowing, delivering items, and other symbolic actions to represent the bride’s formal acceptance into her husband’s family.

“My pikin, as you dey enter this our house today, you go be good wife. You go respect your husband, take care of am, born pikin for am.”

The elder went on to caution the bride on marital conduct, stating, “If your husband cheat on you, e fit happen, you go forgive am. No vex too much, no pack comot.”

However, the message took a stricter tone when addressing female infidelity. The elder warned, “But you must never cheat on your husband. If you do am, e go bad. The Erivwin go come visit you. You fit sick, your pikin fit sick, or even die. Na our tradition be that.”

The session closed with prayers and blessings, to which family members replied with “Amen” and customary chants.
