The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, or NAFDAC, has been directed by the federal government to halt all enforcement operations related to the planned prohibition on alcoholic drinks in 200ml PET bottles and sachets.
Additionally, the instruction directs the government to cease sealing plants and warehouses associated with the impacted products immediately.
Terrence Kuanum, the Special Adviser on Public Affairs to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, made the announcement in a statement released in Abuja on Wednesday.
He claimed that the Office of the SGF and the Office of the National Security Adviser expressed worries about the security ramifications of implementing the prohibition before the National Alcohol Policy was completely in place, which led to the decision.
The announcement said that even though the Federal Ministry of Health had approved the National Alcohol Policy, all activities pertaining to the prohibition had been halted until discussions were finished and the policy was fully implemented.
The government issued a warning that further enforcement might pose wider security threats and destroy jobs, supply lines, and informal distribution networks across the country.
It stated that following interagency consultations, a final decision would be communicated.
