FG refutes claims of neglected Nigerian scholarship students in Morocco

The Federal Government has denied rumours that Nigerian students on scholarship in Morocco have been abandoned, calling the claims false and aimed to misinform the public.

Videos circulating on social media, including one published on X (previously Twitter) by activist Martins Otse, better known as VeryDarkMan, showed Nigerian students claiming to have gone years without financial support while receiving federal scholarships.

Responding to the assertions, Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, issued a statement on Wednesday, underlining that the narratives “false, unfounded, and deliberately crafted to misinform the public.”

Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, clarified that “no Nigerian student on a valid Federal Government scholarship has been abandoned.”

He further stated that all students who joined in the Bilateral Education Scholarship Programme before 2024 got funds in accordance with the 2024 budget year.

Any delays in outstanding payments, he explained, are due to fiscal constraints, which are being resolved through continuing discussions between the Ministries of Education and Finance.

The statement also denied reports that new bilateral scholarships were issued in 2025, describing materials to the contrary as “fake, unauthenticated, and a calculated attempt to mislead the public and discredit government policy.”

According to the ministry, “no new bilateral scholarship awards were made in October 2025 or at any time thereafter.

Alausa stated that the government’s decision to end fully sponsored bilateral scholarships overseas came after an assessment decided that Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education now have the capacity to conduct programming domestically.

As a result, only fully financed scholarships from foreign governments are currently supported, with the host countries bearing all financial commitments.

The government informed students who had previously registered under previous arrangements that they would continue to receive assistance until the end of their studies.
