The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has continued the demolition of buildings and structures reportedly built on waterways and erosion paths across the nation’s capital.

The development follows an order issued by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, last week directing the demolition of houses constructed on waterways after heavy flooding was recorded across parts of Abuja on August 16.

The downpour reportedly caused severe flooding in several areas, including Wuse 2, Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent, Gudu and Efab Estate in Lokogoma.

Several vehicles were reportedly submerged in floodwater, while the bridge linking Gaduwa and Durumi was also heavily affected, leaving motorists stranded and disrupting movement.

Following the minister’s directive, FCTA officials have continued to pull down structures identified as being located on waterways and erosion paths.

Photos shared online showed some buildings that had already been demolished, while others were still being pulled down by the authorities.

The ongoing exercise has drawn attention to the risks associated with building on waterways and areas vulnerable to flooding and erosion.
