Burnley scored deep into stoppage time to earn a 1-1 draw against 10-man Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, aggravating the hosts’ problems with discipline and game management.
In the 93rd minute, substitute Zian Flemming headed home from a James Ward-Prowse corner after Chelsea was down to ten men following Wesley Fofana’s punishment.
Chelsea appeared to be in control for much of the game, taking the lead after four minutes when Joao Pedro finished from close range following superb work by Pedro Neto.
The hosts produced additional opportunities, with Cole Palmer failing to benefit on a defensive error and Burnley custodian Martin Dubravka making crucial saves.
Burnley’s first-half threat was limited, but Lesley Ugochukwu shot over from a corner granted after custodian Robert Sanchez was punished for keeping the ball for more than eight seconds under amended enforcement standards.
The turning point came in the 72nd minute, when Fofana drew a second yellow card, forcing Chelsea to defend a slim lead.
Within minutes, Burnley began to apply consistent pressure, with Josh Laurent testing Sanchez from a distance.
Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior added defensive reinforcements, while Burnley manager Scott Parker made attacking alterations.
The gamble paid off in stoppage time, as Flemming rose unmarked to head Ward-Prowse’s delivery. Substitute Jacob Bruun Larsen almost finished the turnaround moments later.
Chelsea fans booed at the end of the game. The result means the Blues have surrendered 19 points from winning positions in the league this season and have six red cards, the most in the division.
Chelsea move up to fourth place, despite having played more games than other rivals.
Burnley remain second from bottom, eight points from safety, but they depart west London with an important point.
